Welcome to Open Emissions ("we," "us," or "our"). By accessing or using our website at openemissions.org (the "Site"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use. If you do not agree with these terms, please do not use the Site.

1. About the Site

Open Emissions is a free, publicly accessible tool that makes it easier to view, search, and export greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data sourced from official UNFCCC Common Reporting Tables (CRTs). We restructure and categorize this data to be more accessible, but we are not affiliated with the UNFCCC.

2. Data Sources and Accuracy

All emissions data on the Site is sourced from official Common Reporting Tables submitted by UNFCCC member countries. We restructure and recategorize this data to improve usability, but we do not alter the underlying figures.

While we make every effort to ensure the data on our Site is accurate and up to date, we do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any data presented. The data may contain errors introduced during the original country submission, during our processing pipeline, or through delays in updates. You should always verify critical data against the original UNFCCC source before relying on it for research, policy, legal, or commercial purposes.

3. License and Use of Data

Data and written content hosted on Open Emissions is provided under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license. You are free to share and adapt the material for any purpose, including commercial use, provided you give appropriate credit.

The underlying emissions data is sourced from UNFCCC public submissions and is additionally subject to the UNFCCC's terms of use. It is your responsibility to comply with those terms when using the data.

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

• Use automated tools (scrapers, bots, etc.) to access the Site in a manner that degrades performance for other users or places unreasonable load on our infrastructure
• Misrepresent the source of the data — for example, presenting Open Emissions data as your own original research without attribution, or implying UNFCCC endorsement
• Use the Site or its data for any unlawful purpose
• Attempt to interfere with or compromise the security or availability of the Site

We reserve the right to restrict or block access to the Site for any user who violates these terms.

5. No Warranty

The Site and all data, content, and services provided through it are offered "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

We do not warrant that the Site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful components, or that any data will be accurate or complete.

6. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Open Emissions and its contributors shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or revenues, whether incurred directly or indirectly, or any loss of data, use, or goodwill, arising from:

• Your use of or inability to use the Site
• Any errors, inaccuracies, or omissions in the data or content
• Any unauthorized access to or use of our servers
• Any decisions made or actions taken based on data obtained from the Site

The Site may contain links to third-party websites, including the UNFCCC and other data sources. We are not responsible for the content, accuracy, or practices of any third-party sites. Linking to a third-party site does not imply endorsement.

Your use of the Site is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which describes how we collect and use analytics data through PostHog. By using the Site, you acknowledge that you have read and understood our Privacy Policy.
